After reading a recent Serious Eats article about the best thin crust pizza places in the Bay Area, I had to go and try some of them myself. The two I tried were Arinell in the Mission and Nick's Pizza in Oakland. Both were really good, tiny hole-in-the-wall places.
First up is Arinell Pizza , which has a location in the Mission and one in Berkeley. We went to the one in the Mission around 5pm and got a VERY fresh slice. The line was out the door and slices were claimed before the pizza came out of
the oven. The seconds-out-of-the-oven slice I had was very hot and crispy. Perfect crust. Delicious. Good sauce to cheese ratio. We also tried a Sicilian slice but it was not as good as the Neapolitan slice. This is now my favorite NY-style pizza
I've had in the Bay Area.
The second place I went to was Nick's Pizza in Oakland, close to Berkeley on Shattuck. They call themselves Oakland-style pizza. The defining feature of their pizza is the sourdough crust. The sourdough crust was... interesting, but the toppings are what really made this slice. We got a slice that had squash, basil pesto, and other in-season ingredients (top-left slice in photo) that was just amazing! Unfortunately, some of the other combinations I wanted to try were not available by the slice, but I would definitely return for a whole pie from Nick's.
